6 Ways Our Dogs Tell Us They're Nervous

Some subtle, some not so subtle

You know when your
dog is a bit off

We’ve all noticed when our dogs seem a little off. Maybe they’re tense, moving slowly, or just quieter than usual. Dogs often express their nervousness or uncertainty through body language and behaviour and by recognising these signs you’ll know when your dog could use some extra reassurance.

How do dogs communicate?

1. Crouched Posture & Whale eyes

When a dog crouches or shows the whites of their eyes (whale eye), it signals fear or anxiety. This body language shows they are unsure or trying to avoid a stressful situation.

2. Lip Licking or Yawning

These behaviors are often calming signals that dogs use when they’re feeling stressed or uncomfortable. Lip licking can be a way for your dog to self soothe, while yawning may be their way of trying to relax or reduce tension in a stressful situation

3. Tucked Tail & Ears Back

A low or tucked tail and flattened ears are classic signs that your dog is feeling scared or uncomfortable. They may be trying to make themselves smaller to avoid a perceived threat.

4. Pacing & Hiding

Pacing restlessly or hiding away in a safe spot are signs of anxiety. Dogs may move in circles or retreat when they feel overwhelmed or unsure. Providing your dog with their safe space (such as their bed, crate or specific area) is crucial in helping them cope with stressful situations as they will seek it out.

5. Panting, Shaking or Trembling

Excessive panting, trembling, or shaking can indicate that your dog is nervous or stressed, especially when it’s not related to heat or physical activity.

6. Excessive Barking or Whining

Vocalisations like barking or whining often show discomfort or insecurity. If your dog is anxious, they might bark more than usual or whine to get your attention or release their tension.

Conculsion

As with any behavioral advice, you know your dog best, so consider the above in relation to their usual behavior. Understanding how dogs communicate is essential for strengthening the bond between you and your dog, making your time together even more enjoyable.
