The Importance of Treats When Training Your Dog

This is the blog all dog's want read! It's about treats, treats and more treats.

Training your dog is all about communication, and one of the best ways to get your message across is through positive reinforcement, rewarding good behavior with something your dog loves, like treats!

Why Treats Work So Well

Dogs, like humans, are motivated by rewards. When they associate a behavior with something positive, they are more likely to repeat it. Treats act as a clear and immediate incentive, reinforcing good behavior in a way that your pup understands.

4 The Benefits of Positive Reinforcement

1. Encourages Learning – Rewarding desired behaviors makes training enjoyable and effective. Your dog will be eager to learn and repeat actions that earn rewards.

2. Strengthens Your Bond – When you train with kindness and rewards, your dog trusts you more, leading to a stronger relationship.

3. Reduces Fear & Anxiety – Harsh corrections or punishment can create fear, while positive reinforcement builds confidence and happiness.

4. Lasting Results – Reward-based training creates fast behavior changes, as your dog quickly associates good actions with positive outcomes. However, consistency and practice over time are key to reinforcing and maintaining these behaviors for the long run

Stella's Tail - This is where we slipped up with Stella! We thought we'd cracked things like recall with Puppy Stella after just a few weeks, but overtime we started to take it from granted. Any training requires constant work and 'topping up.'

How to Use Treats Effectively

Timing is Everything – Reward immediately after the desired behavior to help your dog make the right connection.

Keep Treats Small – Use tiny, tasty treats to avoid overfeeding while keeping motivation high. (Stella's current favourite is the beef flavour treat from James & Ella)

Be Consistent – Reinforce behaviors consistently so your dog understands what’s expected.

Training should be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your dog. By using treats and positive reinforcement, you’ll set your pup up for success while building a happy, well-behaved companion. So, grab some treats and start training, your dog will thank you!

Speaking of treats, you'll need somewhere to hold them, right?
